Can Cosmetic Dentistry help boost self confidence?

Cosmetic Dentistry as well as maintaining good oral hygiene can contribute towards boosting your self confidence and allowing to be able to produce the perfect smile. Depending on the state of your oral health, there are several dental treatments that you can opt for including Tooth Bonding, Veneers or even Braces.

However, in order to maintain your new found healthy teeth, “it’s important to brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day, restrict your intake of sugary and acidic food and drink and visit your dentist regularly,” said Professor Damian Walmsley, who is the scientific advisor at the British Dental Association.

So if you are worried about the state of your oral health, then visit us today or call us on 01622 730548 to find out how we can help you.

Are you looking for a dentist that takes nervous patients?

Roseacre Dental Practice Press Release

In recent months, Roseacre Dental has seen uplift in enquiries for dental treatments from nervous patients and patients who have what we term “dental phobia”. Now I think its safe to say that most patients feel embarrassed about their state of their dental health, especially if its in a bad condition.

Most patients only have a dental phobia because they don’t want a dentist going into their mouth telling them that they have severe gum disease or are at risk of losing their teeth. However, if you can see that your dental health has deteriorated then you should consult your dentist as soon as possible, because no matter how embarrassed you are of admitting to poor dental health, the later you leave it the worst it will get.

Now although dentistry has advanced a lot over the last few years and there are now several dental treatments available such as intravenous sedation to help the patient feel relaxed, rather than sedating our patients, we like to take a more down to earth approach, helping the patients build their confidence in dentistry.

We like to build our patients confidence over a number of visits, starting with simple procedures such as visiting the dental hygienist for a thorough cleaning and then progressing towards more advanced dental procedures.

So by spending time with the patient and using this approach, we can contribute towards the patients self confidence when having to go visit a dentist, helping the patient become desensitised and hopefully feeling more comfortable about visiting a dentist to improve their dental health. This approach will also allow us to then assess whether intravenous sedation is a necessary procedure to undertake for that particular patient.

So, if you are a nervous patient and would like to know more about how we can help you then please contact us today for more details on how we can help you overcome your dental phobia.

Athletes made aware of dangers in consuming sports drinks

One of Australia’s top sports dentists, Dr Brett Dorney, has warned consumers that by drinking sports drinks, athletes and professional recreational athletes can potentially be damaging their teeth.

Dr Dorney noticed this link between teeth erosion and sports drinks when he reviewed 25 dental cases of some of the top athletes within the industry at his Sydney practice in 19995. He continued that “We were absolutely shocked to find that elite athletes do not have elite mouths, they were suffering widespread erosion and a lot of them had decayed teeth”.

This form of dental problems is not something that we expect from some of the top icons that we look up to in the community.

Dr Dorney will be presenting his research into dental decay at an international conference in the US. Although Dr Dorney is not discouraging athletes from drinking sports drinks, he feels that they need to be made aware of some of the problems that consuming sports drinks can have on their oral health.

Dodging dental appointments is not wise

A new survey conducted by the British Dental Association (BDA) has shown that thousands of people are cancelling their dental appointments and are inevitably putting their health at risk.

The survey was conducted with 251 dentists across England and found that cancellations lead to a clear rise in emergency dental cases with patients requiring urgent dental treatment.

The survey found that 59% of dental practitioners experienced a rise in the number of patients cancelling their dental appointments with 68% reporting that patients had asked for their dental treatments to be deferred. With dental appointment cancellations and dental treatments being deferred, this has had a knock on effect on the number of emergency cases that dentists have had to deal with over the past 12 months (the BDA reported a 34% rise in emergency cases).

Dental checkups can in some cases reveal more seriously underlying health problems that have gone un-noticed and therefore it’s crucial that you attend them.

Dr Susie Sanderson from the BDA said that “It’s understandable that, at a time when there is widespread concern about household finances, some patients’ financial anxieties are leading them to defer dental appointments and treatment”. However, she also argued that “achieving short-term money savings at the expense of longer-term health problems really isn’t wise.” She continued by saying that “neglecting your oral health can increase both the complexity of the problems you face and the cost of the treatment you must eventually have.

So by trying to save money in the short term, you can actually end up spending more in the long run, due to the severity of your dental problem and the type of dental treatment you will end up requiring.

Dental hygiene is important for a Childs development

Dental hygiene and overall health is essential to not only adults but also children. According to Mark Helpin, pediatric dentist from Temple University, an early visit to the dentist is crucial for children. He continues that “a child should be first seen by a dentist by 12 months of age or within six months of the time that the first tooth emerges into the mouth” because at this age, dentists can look into preventive dental treatment for your children, to stop their oral health from deteriorating. They will advise you on how to maintain good oral hygiene for your children, by cleaning the mouth fully. They will also advise on eating habits and diet, the best dental fluoride to use, as well as tips on how to help avoid additional habits that children can start to develop at that age such as thumb sucking.

During your first visit to the dentist, you will be advised on the state of your child’s teeth and gums, showing you how to brush their teeth as well as advising on a healthy diet for them. This is a very important aspect of children’s dentistry.

Finally, its important to highlight that although some adults may think that up to the age of 12 months, its not important to maintain oral health for babies because the baby teeth will fall out anyway, they are wrong. This is because your baby teeth help determine the position of your adult teeth and hence its absolutely crucial to take care of your teeth at all stage of your life to ensure that you don’t require dental surgery to help the growth of new teeth or to aid any other problems.

1 in 3 people living in villages get regular dental care

The Director of NHS West Kent, Steven Ingram revealed the crisis surrounding dental care for those living in smaller towns or villages.  He revealed that of those people living across the Tonbridge and Malling district, only 37.7% of the population actually see a dentist. Similar stats have been revealed for the Inghtham and Wrotham areas with only 33.9% and 34.8% of the population in those districts visiting a dentist.

Mr Ingram highlighted that “NHS West Kent has no plans to make further investment in NHS dentistry during the remainder of this financial year, but will consider future decisions on investment according to the priorities and needs of the local population, taking account of the financial climate.”

Sarah Gillender who is the Practice manager at Fourways Dental Surgery in Borough Green highlighted that “The nearest NHS dentists are Sevenoaks and Maidstone. There aren’t enough dentists on NHS contracts to serve everyone.”

David Hughes, who is the Chief Executive of Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council also agreed and argued that “More local dentists need to be encouraged to take up NHS contracts.”
