Why Is Dental Hygiene Important?

When your dentist tells you to brush and floss twice a day, it may seem like a chore – but it’s a necessity for good dental hygiene. Why? Because keeping on top of your oral health has so many fantastic benefits. In this post, our dentists here in Maidstone will highlight just some of these, so you can see why we’re huge advocates of a good dental routine.

1. Gum disease

Gingivitis (early-stage gum disease) and periodontitis (advanced gum disease) are serious businesses. While your mouth can recover from very mild gingivitis, once problems set in, it can be extremely difficult to treat. Gum disease is characterised by red, swollen and bleeding gums; if untreated, it can lead to infection and even tooth loss. Your dental hygienist will check for signs of gum disease and advise you as and when needed.

2. Staining

Our teeth are put through their paces throughout the day – whether we’re eating and drinking staining substances, smoking, or just not cleaning our teeth properly. Brushing and flossing not only help dislodge bacteria and food particles but can also help scrub away stains that otherwise build up on our smiles. Many dental hygienists can carry out teeth whitening to brighten the smile.

3. Infection

A bacterial infection can cause abscesses, or pockets of pus, to form inside teeth, gums or bones. Pain, redness and swelling can all occur and sensitivity is also common. Another symptom is a bad taste in the mouth or foul-smelling breath. Like any type of infection, it can spread and lead to other problems, such as fever. A good oral routine helps prevent a build-up of bacteria in the mouth.

4. Decay

1 in 3 adults has tooth decay – a shocking national statistic – and 2 in 3 has visible plaque [1]. Decay weakens the teeth and exposes the delicate inner tissues and nerves, resulting in sensitivity, pain and toothache. In severe cases, a tooth may even need to be removed by your dentist, or a treatment like a root canal is recommended.

5. Wider health

Looking after your oral health; mouth, teeth and gums don’t just help them stay in top condition – it can help you stay healthier as a whole, too. For instance, gum disease has been linked to heart disease, diabetes and more. That’s why your dentist emphasises the importance of good oral hygiene.
