The Difference Between Botox and Dermal Fillers

A Danish study has found that looking younger can help you live longer. By looking at 1800 sets of twins with an average age of 70, the study discovered that it was the older-looking twin who passed away first in most cases. This was put down to a difference in chromosomal structure. However, further studies have revealed that if you look younger, you’re more likely to take care of yourself better by leading a healthier lifestyle and achieve the same result. You can do all of this with the help of dermal fillers.

Here at Roseacre Dental, we can’t change your chromosomal structure. The length of your telomeres is between you and your geneticist! What we can do though, is help you appear younger in a natural-looking way, through Botox and dermal filler treatment. These are both non-invasive cosmetic injectables that are designed to smooth over your wrinkles and turn back the clock. Knowing which of these is most likely to benefit your appearance is key to combating ageing.

Our highly trained practitioner will be able to advise you on the best course of treatment as regards the individual way in which your skin is maturing, when you visit us for your initial consultation. For now, here’s an overview of the two different treatments, what they do and how they do it.

The skin treatment areas of Botox and Dermal fillers

Botox is ideally suited to reducing deep lines on the upper face, most particularly around the forehead area. It can smooth over prominent forehead lines that run horizontally and vertically. The glabella lines between the eyebrows are known as frown lines. It can also raise drooping eyebrows and remove crows feet.

In addition to having a cosmetic use, Botox is often used for medical purposes; to relieve the symptoms of migraines, conditions that cause spasms and hyperhidrosis, which is when an excess of sweat is produced by over-active glands.

Dermal fillers are better suited to the reduction of lines on the lower face. The lines that run from your nostrils to the corners of your lips are known as nasolabial lines, while the wrinkles that run lower; from the corners of your lips to your chin are known as marionette lines. Filler treatment can reduce these and even provide you with a effect similar to that of a facelift at the same time.

As well as reducing lines, fillers can plump up skin volume. Our skin gets thinner as we age, but fillers provide a cushioning effect under the skin, lifting it from underneath to give you a plumper, more youthful skin volume. Areas of the face that tend to experience skin thinning faster than others and can be greatly enhanced with fillers include the tear troughs, under the eyes, the cheeks and the lips.

How do they work?

Both Botox and dermal fillers are injected under the skin using an ultra fine needle. They take under 30 minutes to administer and neither treatment requires you to take any time off work, as there’s no lengthy recovery period of the kind cosmetic surgery requires.

Botox is a temporary muscle relaxant. It stops muscles from contracting and this prevents wrinkles from forming. Its effects last for 3-4 months. Dermal fillers consist of hyaluronic gels, which when combined with water, gain volume like a sponge and push the covering skin upwards giving it a plumper appearance. Its effects last for 6 months.
