Home Teeth Whitening Methods For A Sparkling Smile

Teeth whitening continues to be one of the most searched-for treatments of dental patients and celebrities alike. Whiter and brighter teeth help you to look younger and healthier, allowing you to light up a room with your dazzling smile. Daydreaming about gleaming teeth could be made a reality easily with these top tips for home teeth whitening, so maybe it’s time to get a little (and safely) experimental…

Make your own mouthwash and toothpaste

Never substitute your usual mouthwash for something homemade, but this might be a fun idea to try in tandem with your regular cleaning routine. Baking soda is a natural bleach for teeth that is an ingredient in many toothpastes, so why not try harnessing this bleaching power yourself? Try mixing a quarter of a teaspoon of baking soda with water and apply it (along with your regular toothpaste) to your teeth while brushing. It won’t cause any harm to your teeth and its proven to achieve some natural teeth whitening. You could also try this with warm water and salt in a DIY mouthwash to use alongside your regular cleaning habits. Mix a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and use as a mouthwash for 3 minutes. It might taste a little weird, but this solution is anti-bacterial and an at-home teeth whitener.

Oil pulling

This controversial whitening technique is an ancient Indian folk remedy that claims to whiten your teeth, freshen your breath, and kill bacteria in your mouth. In a round-about way, it actually does do all of the above. Oil pulling, typically using coconut oil, involves swishing and swilling coconut oil around your mouth like a mouthwash for 15 minutes. A tablespoon is all you need to kill harmful bacteria in your mouth and wash them away. The reason this is a controversial tooth whitening method is that some studies sing its praises, while others aren’t overly enthusiastic about it. It is tried and tested disinfectant of your mouth, though, which in turn keeps bacteria in check and helps prevent cavities. These bacteria also eat away at your enamel, revealing the yellow dentin beneath. So, in a round-about way, oil pulling can work if you use it in tandem with regular teeth cleaning.

Foods that whiten your teeth

Your house, especially your kitchen, could be full to the brim with foods and fruits that work as natural teeth whitening. For example, did you know that apples are one of the best sources for natural bleach? They contain malic acid which naturally and safely bleaches the surfaces of your teeth. Their texture is also beneficial because it is rough and crunchy, ideal for dislodging and rubbing away any food debris on your teeth. Strawberries contain the same malic acid, so you can enjoy a sweet treat while you whiten your teeth at home.

Take-home teeth whitening kits

Teeth whitening has evolved from in-office treatments, because you can now perform professional teeth whitening treatments in your own home. While these professional kits are only available through dentists, once you’re approved as suitable for treatment you can achieve brilliant results from the comfort of your own home. Here at Roseacre Dental, for example, we supply our patients with Opalescence teeth whitening trays and gel. Not only do you receive impeccable results, but it also helps reduce sensitivity and strengthen your enamel.
